EVALUATION OF A MOTIVATIONAL SPEAKER
Providing evaluative feedback to a motivational speaker is crucial to both the speaker and the person (s) hiring the speaker. "Evaluation can be defined as the process of identifying, obtaining and providing information, opinions and expressions of value to be used in making decisions." (Duncan, J ; Jahnke, J. 1981). Most people desire the opportunity to provide input into any given situation that directly affects them. In the case of motivational speaking situations this is particularly true for the people/organization who hired the speaker as well as the people who formed the audience for the speaker. For both of these parties there has been investments of time and money. And people who invest their time and money want their opinions and reactions to be heard. They also want the opportunity to influence future courses of action. For example, they may have had a very positive experience with the speaker and they would invite the opportunity to let the speaker know that and perhaps the opportunity to recommend the speaker to other organizations. By the same token, people and organizations who have a negative experience with a speaker would welcome the opportunity to let the speaker know what about the speaker's presentation e.g. content and/or delivery or fit with the occasion, was not received well and how it may have been done differently.
In this article, we will provide three samples of evaluations which could be used or could be modified for use by organizations hiring a speaker, by the audience, and by the speaker.
